Review essential terms to help get started with Autonomous Linux.
- GROUP

A collection of instances that's managed together for standard tasks.

- INSTANCE

An OS installation that has registered with the service. An instance is an OCI compute instance.

The terms instance, virtual machine, and system are used interchangeably in the Autonomous Linux documentation.See Managing Instances.
- JOB

An action that the service takes against one or more instances, such as installing updates or attaching software sources to an instance or group. A job can be run immediately or scheduled for a future date and time. Some jobs, such as update jobs, can also be scheduled as a recurring event. When a job runs, it dispatches work to the instance.

- ORACLE CLOUD AGENT

Autonomous Linux uses an Oracle Cloud Agent plugin. The agent interacts with the instance as directed by the service and reports data and results back to the service.

- OS MANAGEMENT HUB AGENT PLUGIN

The service plugin for the Oracle Cloud Agent.
- PROFILE
- A profile defines the default software sources for an instance or the group to assign to the instance.
- REGISTRATION

The initial onboarding of an instance into the service.
- SOFTWARE SOURCE

A software repository. The service uses software sources to provide packages and module streams to instances and groups. Software sources are defined within the OS Management Hub service.
The following types of software sources are available for managing instances and groups:
- VENDOR SOFTWARE SOURCE
- A software repository with content provided by the OS vendor.
- CUSTOM SOFTWARE SOURCE
- A user-defined software repository derived from vendor software sources.
